The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) recently announced the establishment of the Susan McClary and Robert Walser Fellowship in Music Studies. ACLS will begin naming McClary-Walser/ACLS Fellows in 2018, who will engage in projects whose ultimate goal is a major piece of scholarly work. “We are delighted that the McClary-Walser Fellowship will support both emerging and established researchers in music studies for generations to come,” wrote Professors McClary and Walser.
Both funders of the new Fellowship are on the faculty at Case Western Reserve University. A MacArthur Fellow, Ms. McClary served on the ACLS Board of Directors for 10 years, and was the Board chair from 2003 to 2006. She is also the author of three titles in the Humanities E-Book collection: George Bizet, Carmen (Cambridge University Press, 1992); Feminine Endings: Music, Gender and Sexuality (University of Minnesota Press, 2002); and Modal Subjectivities: Self-Fashioning in the Italian Madrigal (University of California Press, 2004), a winner of the Otto Kinkeldey Award from the American Musicological Society. Robert Walser is also an HEB author: Running with the Devil: Power, Gender and Madness in Heavy Metal Music (Wesleyan University Press, 1993), is a winner of the Irving Lowens Book Award from the Society for American Music.
More of HEB’s music titles can found on our Music & Musicology Pinterest board. We hope that in the future the HEB collection will include books by McClary/Walser Fellows!
