Access and Browser Requirements

Books may be accessed directly from links in the MARC records that have been loaded into the catalog of a subscribing institution. These records contain stable URLs that represent the most reliable way to reach the material at our site. If a subscribing institution has an access system that requires that URLs be rewritten, such as for proxy service, statistics tabulation, etc., that institution will need to make those local modifications to the URLs as system access requires.

For most access problems (particularly off-campus), including any proxy server questions, please consult the list of common access problems at:

http://www.lib.umich.edu/digital-library-production-service-dlps/dlps-common-access-problems.

If you experience any browser compatibility issues, you may want to try downloading an updated browser from one of the following sites: Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari.

OpenURL Compliance

HEB is OpenURL compliant on the title level, but not on the chapter and page level. For guidance on linking to text sections, see below.

Linking to Text Sections

HEB currently does not support permanent URLs to the chapter/section level. However, if users wish to create links for individual text sections within a title (e.g., for course-reserve reading), if properly formed, URLs should remain relatively stable. HEB will alert subscribers to any changes in the URL configurations, which will be timed to have minimal impact.

When linking to text sections in individual titles, the following protocol applies:

For page-image books, include URL elements c, idno, view=image, and seq

Link example:
http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/t/text/pageviewer-idx?c=acls;idno=heb02308.0001.001;view=image;seq=00000027

For books with XML encoded text, include URL elements c, idno, rgn, view=text, and node parameter

Link example:
http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=acls;idno=heb90009.0001.001;view=text;rgn=div1;node=heb90009.0001.001:6

ADA Compliance

ACLS Humanities E-Book (HEB), along with its technical partner, the University of Michigan Libraries, is currently reviewing HEB for ADA compliance and making improvements to the site based on this review. Completion of the initial improvements is ongoing and a statement on ADA compliance will be posted to the HEB site once the work is complete.

Printing and Downloading?

ACLS Humanities E-Book follows fair-use rights and restrictions for all books on the site. Since most material on this site is licensed for electronic distribution only, fair-use restrictions should be carefully followed by users for any printing. This means that you may print pages for your personal research use only. If, as an instructor, you want to use material in a course, you can provide the permanent URL on the title record page and the appropriate page numbers to students. If you want to photocopy pages for your course, you must apply directly to the original publisher for permission.

For best printing results see Viewing Options above and choose “Page pdf.” The default setting is set to both view and print three pages at a time. This is generally sufficient for following a citation or extracting a quotation and follows HEB’s policy for fair-use rights and limitations. If in doubt, or for further information, see our section on fair use.

MARC Records

MARC records are available free to subscribers and can be downloaded here.

As of July 1, 2011, three files are available:

acls1-7.zip (includes records for all books in rounds 1-7, online as of March 2010; in MARC-8 format)

acls8.zip (includes all 502 records for the 542 books added in April and June 2011; in Unicode UTF-8 format)

acls1-8.zip (includes 3,149 records for the 3,334 books in rounds 1-8, online as of June 2011; in UTF-8 format)

PLEASE NOTE: All MARC records going forward will be made available in Unicode UTF-8 format rather than the older MARC-8 format. To accommodate those subscribers not wishing to overwrite existing MARCs in a new format, we are making rounds 1-7 and round 8 available separately. However, for consistency, new subscribers should download the last file on this list only, the cumulative file acls1-8.zip in the UTF-8 format, in order to gain access to all titles currently available in the HEB collection.

The records are MARC21, USMARC records prepared by the University of Michigan Libraries. The records from which these electronic resource records were derived came from a variety of sources (vendors, OCLC, RLIN), and are representative of a variety of cataloging standards: pre-AACR1, AACR1, and AACR2. The Monograph Cataloging Division of the University of Michigan University Library has made every effort to bring these records up to current national standards.

There is a discrepancy between the number of files and the number of books in the collection due to the fact that multi-volume sets have a single record.

MARC records are provided “as is.” Libraries can download a sample file here: (Download now.)

Libraries can adapt MARC records as needed. A free MARC editing tool known as “MarcEdit” can be downloaded from: http://oregonstate.edu/~reeset/marcedit/html/downloads.html.

Subscribers may share the HEB bibliographic records and metadata with third-party, not for profit databases (e.g. OCLC WorldCat and the Research Libraries UK database) as well as other service developers and providers working to make this data more broadly accessible as long as the records are not being resold by any party.

Titles/Records Removed

Since HEB went live in September 2002, forty titles have been removed from the site due to changes in licensing availability; nine inaccurate records have also been removed. Libraries can download a list of those titles: (Download now.)

Usage Statistics (Stats)

Institutional subscribers can access their stats at
http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/s/stats/subscriber
(choose ACLS Humanities E-Book (acls) in scrolling menu).

HEB stats are COUNTER compliant. (Be sure your email will receive emails and emails with attachments from dlxs-info@umich.edu.)

IMPORTANT: Even though four reports are technically available, for details on title usage HEB subscribers should draw ONLY on COUNTER Book Report 2. The reason for this is that BR1 provides data only on those digital texts that the user can view in their entirety all at once. This does not apply to any of the books in the HEB collection, which can be viewed exclusively on a page-by-page or section-by-section basis. Therefore, only BR2 will give an accurate picture of title usage for HEB.

  1. CUSTOM report will provide total browse requests, searches, and page/text views across the collection by month.
  2. COUNTER Book Report 1 will provide the number of successful full title requests by month (not applicable for HEB).
  3. COUNTER Book Report 2 will provide the number of successful requests for an individual page image or section of digital text (such as a chapter or section) with title information for each month.
  4. COUNTER Book Report 5 will provide data on searches but with title information as well.

NOTE: HEB tracks usage through IP access. Consequently HEB does not track institutional access through ATHENS or SHIBBOLETH. Athens and Shibboleth users need to combine the results of HEB stats with those stats for an accurate picture of usage.

NOTE: HEB also does not track off-campus password access for secondary schools that do not use a proxy server. Consequently, depending on how HEB is accessed at those schools, stats for HEB may seem unexpectedly low.

Proxy Server Configuration

If your campus uses a proxy server, it generally needs to be configured with the host names and/or domains of our servers. As of 2008-11 these are:

Title ACLS Humanities E-Book
URL http://www.humanitiesebook.org/
HostJavaScript ets.umdl.umich.edu
HostJavaScript hdl.handle.net
HostJavaScript hdl.lib.umich.edu
HostJavaScript name.umdl.umich.edu
HostJavaScript quod.lib.umich.edu
HostJavaScript www.hti.umich.edu

For the proxy service to take effect, users at your campus or institution need to access the service via a connection through the proxy server, not directly. Your proxy server administrator can provide you with a proper URL for linking to our service; ensure that your users are entering via that URL.

Common Access Problems

If you experience problems that result in being prompted for authentication, inability to reach the authentication page itself, or receiving a message that collections are not authorized, please consult: http://www.lib.umich.edu/node/21784/.

Shibboleth

HEB now provides Shibboleth service via the UK Federation. Support for other federations is possible. If you are interested, please contact us at info@hebook.org for details.
